Deploying the CrashPlan backup for Endpoints on macOS

This section provides details on deploying the CrashPlan platform on macOS.

Before You Begin

To deploy the CrashPlan Platform app on macOS, you must first obtain an Apple MDM Push Certificate. For instructions, review the official Apple documentation on obtaining an MDM Push Certificate for Microsoft Intune.

The CrashPlan Platform app is packaged as a .dmg file for macOS installation. Before deployment, host the.dmg file in a location that is accessible for download and ensure you have the direct URL to the hosted file available. This URL will be required to complete the deployment configuration.

Creating a deployment script for Intune

On macOS the CrashPlan app is deployed through the use of a script uploaded to Intune. The deployment script should perform the following steps:

  1. Check if the application is already installed.

  2. Download the package from an accessible URL.

  3. Mount the downloaded disk image.

  4. Copy the app from the disk image to the Applications folder.

  5. Remove any temporary files.

  6. Modify permissions if necessary.

  7. Launch the app for the first time.

A sample bash script is provided on the next page that you can copy and modify for your environment.

Sample deployment script

#!/bin/bash

sas="PACKAGE URL"

dmgfile="/tmp/Mac_2.6.2_Parablu_EPA.dmg"
appsource="/Volumes/Mac_2.6.2_Parablu_EPA.dmg/Mac_2.6.2_Parablu_EPA.app"

# Checks if the app is already installed

if [ -e /Applications/Mac_2.6.2_Parablu_ EPA.app ]
then
echo "App is already installed" /tmp/installedvolu.txt
exit 0
fi

# Downloads the package
curl -L -f -o "$dmgfile" "$sas"
echo "App package downloaded" /tmp/installedvolu.txt

# Mounts the disk image
sudo hdiutil attach -nobrowse "$dmgfile"
echo "App package mounted" /tmp/installedvolu.txt

# Copies the app to the Applications folder
sudo cp -rf "$appsource" /Applications
echo "App installed" /tmp/installedvolu.txt

Upload the deployment script to Intune

Once you have a valid deployment script, you must upload it to Intune in order to use it.

  1. Sign in as an Intune Administrator.

  2. From Home, navigate to Devices > macOS > Shell Scripts . Select Add .

  3. Select your script file under Upload Script and fill out the following fields:

  • Run script as a signed-in user: No

  • Hide script notifications on devices: Yes

  • Script frequency: Every 30 minutes

  • Max number of times to retry if script fails: 2 times

  1. In the Assignments tab, assign the script to the appropriate User, Device or Group.

  2. Review and add the script, then check the Deployment status.

For more information, review Microsoft's documentation on using shell scripts on macOS devices in Intune.

Self-serve the CrashPlan backup for Endpoints on macOS

Users can self-serve the CrashPlan backup for Endpoints by linking their macOS devices to their organization's Intune using Microsoft's Company Portal app. For more information, review Microsoft's documentation on enrolling your macOS device using the Company Portal app.
